I was terrified the other day that I had lost this sketch book.
After I found out my childhood cat had cancer, I did a bunch of life drawings of her. I always drew cartoon cats, but I had never drawn her from life before. I wanted to do it while I still had the chance. She was 14 and the cancer was aggressive and inside of her mouth.
The one that I did first was the one I got tattooed. It was the first drawing I did, and I came out perfectly. I always imagine her in the window like that, looking out and just enjoying the sun. Even though it doesn’t show her face I felt it looked like her the most.
I didn’t touch up the drawing, I had it tattooed exactly how I drew it. It’s sketchy and weird in parts, but when I drew it I was so full of emotion and I didn’t want to lose any of that.
So it doesn’t matter if the sketchbook is gone, because I’ll always have that drawing.
It’s coming up to the two year anniversary of when she was diagnosed.
Artists: draw your pets and loved ones from life while you still can. To me it’s more special than a photograph. If you do one you really like I promise that you will cherish that drawing forever. Maybe you never thought of doing that before, but I’m hoping that you will :)
